The Varsity football team has not met their expectations this year. After a big win against Gregori last month, they’re looking to turn the season around by trying to win the rest of the season.
The team has been on a 4 game losing streak, but on September 30, the varsity boys beat Gregori with a whopping 72-6 victory.
Then they beatModesto20-13 on Oct 7. These are signs that the Eagles have what it takes to become Modesto Metro Conference champions again.
Senior Clint Howard has faith in his team, even though he thinks that “they are struggling to find their identity this season.”
Howard finds defense to be the team’s strength while passion is their weakness.
“We are using our defense, but we need our offense to come through as well,” Howard said. “Our biggaest weakness is our lack of passion for the game of football. The majority of our team is more worried about what they’re doing after the game then the game itself.”
However in the last two weeks, the Eagles have been soaring over opponents as they search to become Modesto Metro Conference champs again.
“I definitely feel like were starting to work better as a team,” senior Tyler Munoz said. “I feel like we have found our full potential both offensively and defensively.”
Senior Stephan Daniels feels good about the big win last Friday night.
“It was a good win,” Daniels said. “I had a good game, and it was important for the team to keep our hopes up.”
Both Munoz and Daniels agree that the win against Modesto High on homecoming was a huge win for the team.
“This win is huge for our team we’re reaching our full potential as a team and its really good to see,” Munoz said.
Even though they won the game Munoz says he still has some things he can on his play to help improve the team.
“I feel like I had a pretty good game,” Munoz said. “I still feel like I made a few mistakes, but I’m working to get better and better every game.”
Daniels still thinks they have a lot to work on, but the team has made some positive gains in the last few weeks.
“We have to be a strong second half team,” Daniels said. “We’re starting to play as a team instead of playing as individuals. These past two weeks has really brought us together.”
Howard says that the Eagles still have faith in winning the Modesto Metro Conference and they plan to gel together as a whole as the season continues.
“I believe we can do it,” Howard said. “We have the potential to be a great team and come out on top and be number one. We have lost enough games, it’s time for us to pull it together and win.”
